BumGenius Freetime diapers

I was always intrigued by cloth diapers and so I did a lot (like a loooooot) of research about using cloth before we even had kids. I was so surprised at what cloth diapering looks like today. You don’t need pins or flats of material that you fold different ways and attach to your baby.  The diaper doesn’t have to be GINORMOUS and fluffy, and your baby can still wear normal cloths.  You don’t have to soak and wash poop out with an old washing board or wring cloth inserts. What I learned is that cloth diapering can be just as simple and easy as disposables, and you can save the planet a little too! Cloth diapering is modern, mindful, and totally millennial!

I won’t go over all the different types of diapers today but you can do a google search to see that there are A LOT of different types to choose from.

I liked the idea of never having to stuff diapers with inserts, because I wanted to make cloth diapering as easy as I could for myself. We decided on one sized diapers because cloth diapering is a big investment up front and I wanted to use my diapers for as long as possible. Even though it is nice to save money using cloth diapers, it wasn’t my main purpose choosing cloth and I wanted to invest in something that was high quality and would make my cloth diapering experience a good one.

The diaper that fits all of these needs and that we decided to go with was a one size (meaning the rise is adjustable to fit all sizes) all-in-one (the inserts are attached to the diaper) diaper.

We exclusively use Bum Genius Freetime diapers, and to say we love them is an understatement. They are so incredible that we have over 50 of them, and haven’t even glanced at another brand because we have been so pleased.

Okay, okay, that is a lie, after I thought about it we DO use another type of diaper for when our babies are newborns because the Freetimes are just too big. But once they hit about 10 pounds, we have switched to the Freetimes exclusively.

I like that all of our diapers are the same and that there aren’t any “extra” inserts or parts to keep track of. We use the snap closure diapers and prefer them over the hook and loop closures. The snaps don’t get caught on things in the wash, or curl in on themselves like the Velcro tabs do. There was a small learning curve to become fast and efficient in snapping them on a wiggly baby, but it honestly wasn’t that bad.

I have been extremely impressed that even the very first diapers we bought when I was expecting Riggs (almost 3) are still part of our rotation for Etta (9 months) and they have held up really well.  I am in the process of picking out some of the well used diapers to change out the leg elastic because it is getting a little stretched, but that is the only issue we have had and, from what I hear, totally normal.

One thing that I think has helped our diaper stash last so long is that we have so many of them. My cute mom bought us the majority of our first diapers, I want to say we started with 24, and then I have slowly added to it. Not because of necessity but because I love getting new colors! We have plenty of diapers to rotate in our stash (over 50!) and that helps the life of a diaper so we aren’t washing them every other day.

I really like that bumGenius comes in solid colors that are minimalist. I know lots of people love designs, but I am not a fan of cutesy/character diapers. To be honest, I started out with only white diapers because I liked how simple they were, but we have since added pretty much every other solid color to our stash.

Just take off the diaper, spray a few squirts of diaper spray, wipe (we use cloth wipes like these)  flush any poo with the liner, and throw the diaper in the diaper pail.

Just a little run down of the features the BumGenius Freetime has that we LOVE.

• the “inserts” are sewn to the diaper, so you never have to stuff the diaper. There are two inserts attached to both ends of the diaper and you can fold and use them in a few combinations depending on where you need the absorbency. For both our girl and boy we just lay the flaps right on top of each other, and haven’t had any absorbency issues.

• I especially love the stay dry layer on the liner and definitely think it keeps my babies bums drier. We tried the Thirsties Natural all cotton diaper on a whim for a few days because I had heard such great things about the absorbency and that they wash easier and get cleaner. It was the one and only time I tired another diaper, and I was reassured that the BumGenius Freetime diapers are our best friends!  When I changed the Thirsties diaper, my baby’s bum was WET.   I bet if it was a diaper in my regular rotation I would see a lot more rashes. We sold the two Thirsties diapers….and are happy about it.

• The Freetime has a adjustable three size rise that fits from 8-35+ pounds.

• The Freetimes are very trim and fit under all my kids clothes. I haven’t ever had to size up to make sure pants fit over the diaper. This was something I was very worried about when looking into cloth. I didn’t want people to glance at us and have our clothes scream “cloth diapers!”
• The stretch tap closures of the Freetime help you get a better fit when you are in between snap sizes.

• The Freetrimes clean really well! Some people say that since they are made of synthetic material they hold onto stains and don’t get as clean as a 100% cotton diaper, but I do not agree at all! We have never had staining AT ALL, like never ever. The few days we used the Thirsties diaper, it was stained and looked hammered. I know staining is just cosmetic, but still, the Freetime diapers always look clean and fresh. Even our oldest and most well used diapers look great.
• The Freetime diapers hold up incredibly well. The quality of the Freetime diapers is seriously incredible, and I am so happy with the life we get out of each diaper. The only issue we have had is that after a few years the leg elastic gets stretched out, and it is unfortunately the same with ALL cloth diapers. I am in the process of replacing the elastic in our older diapers and will definitely add a post with a tutorial soon.

I saved both the buybuy BABY coupon and the Bed Bath and Beyond coupons while I was building up my stash, and got 2-4 diapers every month. That is cheaper than a whole months worth of disposables and something you can use for YEARS (we are on three years of using the same diapers in our rotation).

I hope this post has helped you see that cloth diapering is so different now than how our grandmothers did it. There are a lot of awesome products now to make cloth diapering totally simple and doable. Using BumGenius Freetime’s modernizes cloth and makes it completely doable. Even for me, a millennial!
